Boat History Report

Description

  • The Dickerson 37 gained notoriety when Farenc Mate published his book "World's Best Sailboats" and praised the Dickerson 37 as robust, simply built, and a seaworthy craft. They were favored by experienced sailors for their solid construction, excellent joinery, and classic Chesapeake bay heritage, embodying functionality like traditional workboats with quality finishes and strong owner loyalty, similar to Hinckley owners but focused on rugged cruising. They feature sturdy bronze hardware, deep cockpits, and designs inspired by traditional, classic good looks, offering dependable performance and a loyal following for serious sailors. The book celebrates these boats for their blend of modern performance with traditional, dependable design elements, making them timeless cruisers.

  • Many people do not know the Dickerson 37 as they have not been built since the early 1990's. This has resulted in a wonderful cruiser depreciating well below their value. The good side for a buyer is a vessel that fits so many parameters, great sailing ability, tri-cabin layout, cutter rig, traditional good looks, shoal draft which makes her a wonderful coastal cruiser, Chesapeake bay cruiser, Bahama cruiser. The Dickerson 37 is very similar to the Morris 36 and was designed before the Morris. If you are looking for a beautiful, traditional vessel that is exciting to sail and listed at a bargain price, look no further. This will be the last boat you will need to own, not too big and not too small, just right!

Accommodations

  • There were several interior layouts designed, this particular boat is the Tri-Cabin, featuring the master stateroom aft. Starting forward aft of the chain locker is the guest cabin, here she offers a V-berth with center seat or filler for a bouble berth. Teak ceiling strips on the hull sides add to her warmth as well as the teak cabinetry, and teak and holly sole. there is plenty of light and ventilation from the overhead hatch and opening ports on either side.
  • Next is the main salon. She is bright and warm finished in a Herreshoff interior with white bulkheads, teak trim and teak ceiling strips along with her teak and holly sole. Here too she has an overhead hatch and opening ports on either side for additional light and ventilation. The salon has port and starboard settee's with a bulkhead mounted salon dining table on the forward starboard bulkhead. Open and closed shelving outboard. Aft to port is the U-shaped sea galley. Opposite to strarboard is the fully enclosed head with vainty, head and opening port (this is a wet head). One is able to open the aft cabin to the salon via a door and opening bulkhead window, giving the feeling of a larger more open vessel.
  • The aft cabin or owners stateroom has a double berth to port, centerline companionway to the cockpit and forward facing navigation station to starboard. Opening overhead hatch, companionway and opening ports again offer excellent ventilation.
  • Her interior shows the craftmanship in her teak cabinetry and teak and holly sole throughout. The overhead was replaced with a white laminate and teak battens also adding to her custom feel. Her exterior is very traditional in looks but she has an extended fin keel with a skeg hung rudder making for a modern and quick sailing vessel with traditional good looks. She has fiberglass decks but enough teak trim to give her that old world charm without all the maintenance. This owner has opted to keep the exterior teak natural also keeping the maintenance low but one could sand and varnish the exterior teak and it would make her stand out.

The water has always been a part of my life since learning to sail aboard a Sailfish while vacationing in Chatham, Massachusetts. At twelve, I graduated to Penguins and 420’s at the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford, Maryland. My parents always belonged to the Corinthian Yacht Club in Philadelphia and I often accompanied them on cruises aboard a Hinckley Bermuda 40 that we cruised in the Chesapeake.

Understanding banking after working 12 years for Loyola Savings and Loan of Maryland, I helped navigate the purchase of a 32’ Pearson Vanguard for a friend and taught him to sail. Loving the idea of sharing my passion for boating, I joined Oxford Boatyard Yacht Sales (in what is now Safe Harbor Oxford Boatyard and Marina) in 1990 and worked as a broker and office manager for 25 years.

In 1993, Oxford Boatyard Yacht Sales became a dealer for Sabre and Back Cove Motor Yachts and I acquired an understanding and respect for powerboats. I worked closely with the boatyard commissioning new vessels and working as a liaison between new owners and the marina. I have an intimate understanding of the boat buying process - how to guide new owners through surveys, sea trials, registration, and documentation.

I love all boats and each one has its own quality. Though I would consider myself a traditionalist in boat design, I like what the new designs offer in comfort and ability.

My husband (of 30 years) and I live in Easton, Maryland. My husband is the rigging supervisor at Safe Harbor Oxford Boatyard and our daughter, having graduated from Washington College in 2020, is now teaching English as well as coaching the sailing team at the Gunston School in Centreville, Md. She has recently come on board as the Summer Sailing Director with the Tred Avon Yacht Club.

I am starting my 7th year as a broker with Brewer Yacht Sales and in addition to my office at Safe Harbor Zahniser’s in Solomon’s, Maryland I now have an office at Safe Harbor Oxford. This enables me to cover the territory from the Eastern Shore to Solomon’s Island and everything in between.

I look forward to speaking with you and sharing my passion for boats. Let me help you find the perfect yacht or support and guide you in the sale of your existing vessel!
