Description
Kalypso has been owned by the same family for 20 years. She was originally from New England but has been on the Chesapeake Bay since they purchased her in 2001. She has the optional Keel/centerboard design offering the minimum draft of 4'3" and up to 8' with the board down allowing her multiple sailing options.
As quoted from the Sabre brochure; The Sabre 38 is designed to be an owner's delight. She's exciting to sail. She's relaxing to live aboard. She can take you anywhere you want to go. Her beauty and elegance make her a joy to show off.
"Speed and energy to spare," is how Yachting described the Sabre 38's performance. Sailing World ranked her the top U.S. boat in her size range in its "Boat of the Year" competition in 1990.
Her offshore credentials include transatlantic trips and a passage from Maine to Venezuela and back. Her racing resume includes outstanding performances in the Newport and Marion to Bermuda races, Long Island's Around-the-Island race, and countless club events.
With a separate cabin both fore and aft, and a spacious main salon, the Sabre 38 can easily accommodate three couples with privacy. Elegantly finished in teak, she makes entertaining at the dock or at sea a pleasure. She suits the needs of the cruising family, weekend sailor or competitive club racer equally well.
It would be hard to find a better, well rounded sailboat in 1988 or today. Her classic beauty has withstood the test of time.
Note: Though the listing states she has been on the market since April of 2020. The owner did not get her ready until Dec. 2020. The agreement and listing was finally posted in Dec. of 2020.

Hull Design
The Sabre 38's hull is designed to be easily driven while carrying the weight of a moderate displacement yacht. It's a powerful hull shape that yields speed, stability and sail carrying ability. The rudder, a semi-elliptical foil section, adds to the yacht's performance abilities. Saber's Tracker skeg gives the directional stability of a long-keel boat with much less drag.
Construction
The hull and deck are built out of alternate layers of hand-laminated fiberglass mat and biaxial roving over balsa coring. Sabres uses its Duralam technology, a combination of Glidden Blisterguard gelcoat and vinylester resin, to add to hull durability below the waterline.

The water has always been a part of my life since learning to sail aboard a Sailfish while vacationing in Chatham, Massachusetts. At twelve, I graduated to Penguins and 420âs at the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford, Maryland. My parents always belonged to the Corinthian Yacht Club in Philadelphia and I often accompanied them on cruises aboard a Hinckley Bermuda 40 that we cruised in the Chesapeake.
Understanding banking after working 12 years for Loyola Savings and Loan of Maryland, I helped navigate the purchase of a 32â Pearson Vanguard for a friend and taught him to sail. Loving the idea of sharing my passion for boating, I joined Oxford Boatyard Yacht Sales (in what is now Safe Harbor Oxford Boatyard and Marina) in 1990 and worked as a broker and office manager for 25 years.Â
In 1993, Oxford Boatyard Yacht Sales became a dealer for Sabre and Back Cove Motor Yachts and I acquired an understanding and respect for powerboats. I worked closely with the boatyard commissioning new vessels and working as a liaison between new owners and the marina. I have an intimate understanding of the boat buying process - how to guide new owners through surveys, sea trials, registration, and documentation.Â
I love all boats and each one has its own quality. Though I would consider myself a traditionalist in boat design, I like what the new designs offer in comfort and ability.Â
Â
My husband (of 30 years) and I live in Easton, Maryland. My husband is the rigging supervisor at Safe Harbor Oxford Boatyard and our daughter, having graduated from Washington College in 2020, is now teaching English as well as coaching the sailing team at the Gunston School in Centreville, Md. She has recently come on board as the Summer Sailing Director with the Tred Avon Yacht Club.
Â
I am starting my 7th year as a broker with Brewer Yacht Sales and in addition to my office at Safe Harbor Zahniserâs in Solomonâs, Maryland I now have an office at Safe Harbor Oxford. This enables me to cover the territory from the Eastern Shore to Solomonâs Island and everything in between.Â
Â
I look forward to speaking with you and sharing my passion for boats. Let me help you find the perfect yacht or support and guide you in the sale of your existing vessel!
