Overview

Highly customized one owner vessel that is a veteran of both the  Newport Bermuda and  Marion Bermuda races. Constancy also has assembled a long list of round-the-buoy yacht club trophy finishes

"Constancy" is hull number 7 (8 built) Intrepid 40 center cockpit sloop, sloop rig, integral cut away keel and skeg mounted rudder, designed by Chuck Paine well known and a highly respected designer of offshore cruisers. She was custom built to very high standards by Intrepid Yachts, Inc. in Massachusetts the custom division of Cape Dory Yachts.

This vessel was designed as a fast sailing, well-built yacht to provide maximum interior accommodations for her length. She was built as a long distance, live aboard cruising. She has had continual maintenance and upgrading and stored inside during winters in the same yard since she was built.  One innovative design feature was allowing a relatively easy engine removal through the cockpit sole to enable ease of major service. She was re-powered in 1993 with a Yanmar 4JH2-THE (76 hp) replacing the original Perkins 4-108. This engine provides a cruising speed of 7 knots (28,000 rpm) and 1.4 GPH for a range of 450 nautical miles.  At 6 knots (22,000 rpm) she will burn 6 knots for a range of 540 nautical miles.

Constancy has proven to be a very comfortable and seaworthy bluewater vessel. The cockpit is large enough to seat six people comfortably. She offers high backs and seats long enough for a tall man to lie on and stretch out. She stays dry in heavy seas with a large dodger that captures the forward end of the cockpit.  Herreshoff style interior - Formica bulkheads - 6 ft 4 inch headroom and 6 hatches provide a bright spacious and well-ventilated interior.  The main salon is roomy with wide settees, large dining area, full sized forward facing nav station, and sea-going galley. There is a walkthrough to the aft cabin (workbench with vice in walkthrough). There is an ample size forward V-berth and 2 wet heads with showers. She has a very practical comfortable interior arrangement. Each berth has lee cloth.

Designers Comments

"The stability of this boat is very impressive.  A narrow entrance with sweetly vee-ed sections combine with a tall, generous sail plan and beautifully flair hull line, to make this design a powered windward sailor.

Seasoned cruisers and experienced live-aboards will recognize that there are no compromises in the Intrepid 40's hull design, which make her any less then a powerful, steady, rugged sailing vessel with the potential for very fast passages to windward or off the wind.  Her bright spacious and well-ventilated interior will appeal equally well, to those who wish to live aboard and cruise the world's oceans. Both the ship's engineer and homemaker will appreciate the many thoughtful details which make their individual tasks more pleasant."  C.W. Paine, N.A.
